2008 Third 1/4 Newsletter
Severn Hospice is fortunate to have an extensive team of volunteers working in most departments at the three sites Shrewsbury, Telford (Shropshire) and Newtown (Powys). Each volunteer is selected for his or her skills and life experience and together form an extremely valuable resource. They work closely with the patients; complementing the professional staff with time to focus on the relatives and visitors giving support and companionship when needed. All volunteers have access to training that is designed to enhance their own approach. We are also committed to the promotion and good practise of volunteering within the Hospice. This year we are supporting The Severn Hospice. The Severn Hospice needs over £3,000,000 a year to provide its wide range of services to the local community. Only 33% of this sum comes from government funding. That means each and every day they have to raise, through voluntary income, over £5,500 to keep the Hospice open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Severn Hospice cares for those with progressive illnesses across a broad age range. They help those who need them by their high standards of nursing and medical care, trying always to sustain peoples quality of life and relief from pain. To their families, friends and carers they offer the same loving support, help and counselling because incurable illnesses affect whole families. Severn Hospice first opened its doors in 1989 after a decade of fundraising in Shropshire and Mid Wales led by Shelia Laws, founder Chairman of the Hospice. Since opening in 1989 they have cared for over 12,000 patients and take on over 1000 new referrals each year. They have a variety of services to help patients enjoy a better quality of life, often enabling them to do things they thought had gone forever. It is all about love and understanding and so many of life’s little extras. The Hospice is not just a place where people come to die, many go back home again. Many carers are glad of the respite to re-charge their batteries and rekindle their commitment to those they love. Their services include an in-patient facility - a 21 bed ward at Bicton Heath, plus Day Hospices at Hafan in Newtown, Bicton Heath and Apley Castle. They also have a team of Outreach Nurses and a Hospice at Home service which provide care to patients within their own home at different stages of their illness. All our services to patients and their families is offered free of charge, but this care does not go without cost as it takes £4.9million to run the Hospice each year.
August was reaching its end, vegetables carefully grown and nurtured throughout. The summer months had now reached maturity, the soft fruits, apples, damsons, and pears were plump and ripened. Beneath laden trees grass wet with heavy dew lay festooned with crimson windfalls. Summer flowers bowed respectfully to the season’s conclusion.
DBHS are holding their annual Open Gardens event on Sunday July 8th. The starting point will be at Kath & Malcolms 6 Ladygrove (Old Office Rd ) Here you can collect your map and partake of refreshment.
