2008 Third 1/4 Newsletter

Severn Hospice is fortunate to have an extensive team of volunteers working in most departments at the three sites Shrewsbury, Telford (Shropshire) and Newtown (Powys). Each volunteer is selected for his or her skills and life experience and together form an extremely valuable resource. They work closely with the patients; complementing the professional staff with time to focus on the relatives and visitors giving support and companionship when needed. All volunteers have access to training that is designed to enhance their own approach. We are also committed to the promotion and good practise of volunteering within the Hospice. Ward Area - General hostess duties offering support and companionship to patients and visitors. Helping at meal times and making beverages for patients or visitors when requested. Day Hospice - To give help, support and companionship to patients, visitors and staff including general hostess duties such as making refreshments for patients and also serving lunch. Taking part in activities such as trips and arts and craft sessions

Creative Therapy - Assisting the Creative Therapist with arts and crafts in the Day Hospice and many more besides.

2008 Second 1/4 Newsletter

This year we are supporting The Severn Hospice. The Severn Hospice needs over £3,000,000 a year to provide its wide range of services to the local community. Only 33% of this sum comes from government funding. That means each and every day they have to raise, through voluntary income, over £5,500 to keep the Hospice open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In addition, July 2004 saw the launch of the Telford Appeal, to build a new hospice in Telford, meaning the amount to be raised by voluntary contributions will double in the next financial year and beyond. Norma Ross, Appeals Director, and her team are responsible for meeting this challenge head-on and if you would like to help there are many ways in which you can do this. You could become a member of the Hospice Lottery, donate or buy goods from one of their 17 Charity Shops, organise or take part in one of the many fundraising events that take place throughout the year or save your spare change in one of their collecting tins.

If you have a fundraising idea why not drop in to the Appeals Office at Bicton Heath or Apley Castle between 09.00 and 5.00 Monday to Friday. Alternatively, you can donate at a local Severn Hospice Charity Shops across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

This year sees us supporting The Severn Hospice

Severn Hospice cares for those with progressive illnesses across a broad age range. They help those who need them by their high standards of nursing and medical care, trying always to sustain peoples quality of life and relief from pain. To their families, friends and carers they offer the same loving support, help and counselling because incurable illnesses affect whole families. Severn Hospice first opened its doors in 1989 after a decade of fundraising in Shropshire and Mid Wales led by Shelia Laws, founder Chairman of the Hospice. Since opening in 1989 they have cared for over 12,000 patients and take on over 1000 new referrals each year. They have a variety of services to help patients enjoy a better quality of life, often enabling them to do things they thought had gone forever. It is all about love and understanding and so many of life’s little extras. The Hospice is not just a place where people come to die, many go back home again. Many carers are glad of the respite to re-charge their batteries and rekindle their commitment to those they love. Their services include an in-patient facility - a 21 bed ward at Bicton Heath, plus Day Hospices at Hafan in Newtown, Bicton Heath and Apley Castle. They also have a team of Outreach Nurses and a Hospice at Home service which provide care to patients within their own home at different stages of their illness. All our services to patients and their families is offered free of charge, but this care does not go without cost as it takes £4.9million to run the Hospice each year.

New ideas and fresh input are always welcome at DBHS, so when Val Hodson had a ‘notion’ and asked/suggested “Why don’t you have a Top Tray category for the young people”? Val helped with the blue print and now a Top Tray category for sixteens and under has evolved. Val and her family have generously donated a shield in memory of their beloved son Niall for theannual winner of this section.

Such acts of kindness just warms your heart thank you Val.

RNLI today lifeboats in action frightened exhausted in a battered yacht being tossed about by high seas, a sailor makes a desperate Mayday call. Days later, he and his crew will think about how they survived their ordeal.

They will remember the glimpse of an orange and blue lifeboat; her crew members risking their lives amid huge waves to leap aboard. They will remember being taken to the safety of the lifeboat and the feeling of relief that washed over them. And they will know that those RNLI volunteers saved their lives. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a registered charity that saves lives at sea. It provides the 24-hour on-call service to cover search and rescue requirements out to 100 nautical miles from the coast of the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland and aseasonal lifeguard service on appropriate beaches in the south and south west of England. The RNLI is independent from Government and continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.

‘Leave Them Peas Alone’

August was reaching its end, vegetables carefully grown and nurtured throughout. The summer months had now reached maturity, the soft fruits, apples, damsons, and pears were plump and ripened. Beneath laden trees grass wet with heavy dew lay festooned with crimson windfalls. Summer flowers bowed respectfully to the season’s conclusion.

It’s the time of year when avid garden enthusiasts search their finest homegrown produce for that particular superb specimen sure to beat all other exhibitors who dare to enter ‘The Baptist Horticultural Show’. Preparations were well in hand the ‘committee’ established, chief in ‘charge’ was a tall authoritative figure, ‘Mr Jim Pitchford’.
