Madeley Green Day, Sunday October 4th midday-4pm.
Woodland crafts abounded demonstrators encouraged visitors; excited children, mums, dads and grandparents to learn a new skill by discovering the satisfaction of working with natural reed. Making curly plaited willow snails, wood turning using traditional string method to make chunky pencils, delightful Chrysthanemums made from curling wooden strips of birch wood and just how easy it is to make the simplest bird box.
A gaggle of geese, a paddle of ducks, and rabbits hopped side by side in a secure, purposely constructed enclosure.
The delicious aroma of freshly cooked organic crepe pancakes filled the still autumn air.
Marquees housed a variety of stalls manned by enthusiastic local community groups. Robert and Jeff two magnificent heavy horses adorned in full harness their highly polished leather and brass dazzled visitors in the bright sunlight. The spectacular Whitchurch Dog Display Team enthralled a packed arena.
Wild bird of prey display, the Madeley orchard and allotments run by Glennis offered a welcome to those wishing to experience the delights of horticulture. Sound of violin music drifted across from a string ensemble of accomplished musicians.
Trade was brisk under our own DBHS marquee with crockery smash, giant tombola, wooden skittles, and floral willow chaplets all proving extremely popular attractions.
This was an inclusive community event, the beautiful autumn afternoon enhanced by vivid colours of red, yellow, brown and orange turned leaves falling gently from surrounding trees. The laughter of visitors from Shrewsbury, Broseley as well as the immediate local areas of Sutton Hill and Madeley could be heard enjoying this autumn experience within an urban environment.
Living up to its title Madeley Green Day is an environmentally and ecologically sustaining occasion, a shining example to other Borough towns and a refreshing approach to a cleaner brighter future for all.
No noisy intrusive energy gobbling generators used to keep bouncy castles inflated.
Being there amongst the hustle and bustle it was easy to believe in a united cohesive society were people work amicably together for the greater good. Of course there were the usual hiccups route signage being one and an errant van parked indiscriminately caused organisers some consternation this could not detract from an atmosphere of sheer joy.
Well done Madeley.
